I had to write a poem to introduce myself to my second English class at NVCC. That would be Fall 2016. I like it, but it's a little dated now. Anyway, I want to make sure I save it for posterity. Here goes:
I Am (From)
I am from Steve and Kathy, from Minnesota and DC.
I am from Navy bases, but none abroad.
I am born of Scrabble and cribbage,
of arrogance and boredom,
of terror and instability.
I am French night.
I am huevos rancheros and chili.
I am scalloped ham and potatos.
I am the shell script, more BASH than Perl.
I am the broken glass cleanup and the display rack builder.
I am the lights at the concert.
I am the steel scaffolding.
I am Lollapalooza and Woodstock 94.
I am the driver that just climbed out the window.
I am 26 years and change (and still counting).
I am the high priest and the Reiki practicioner.
I am the hard-earned letter in Wrestling and the gimme letter in Cross-Country.
I am the broken clavicle and the poke that missed the eye.
I am all the immunizations needed for Guatemala.
I am snugglebunnies and mosh pits.
I am kilts and combat boots.
I dance on the wooden floors.
I am the plie and the jette.
I am bhangra and salsa.
I am the goth eyeliner, put on in the subway.
I am the character and the NPC.
I imagine and I fear.
I am the sun-baked rocks of the Billy Goat Trail.
I fly my kites over volcanoes.
I broke the angle grinder and the pitch pipe.
I am Smiley and Pablo.
I broke the family cycle.
